But all these times and places and occasions are now and here
Constellations have historically been used to navigate and orientate oneself in the world. This vast space, containing so much knowledge, has the potential of providing one a sense of contentment and security but this infinite space may also result in stirring up feelings of overwhelming anxiety and sublimity when one realizes the vast emptiness of it all. As a species we act to suppress these emotions and search for understanding to form a comforting space. Similarly, the constant media stream of world news can cause these same feelings to bubble up to the surface in our daily lives.
But all these times and places and occasions are now and here, takes the noise produced via that data stream; augmenting it into a vast star field. The installation is constructed of several components, a physical work existing within a gallery, sound work, and connect the dots, each component may function together or as individual works. Beginning with current events which may be present in ones daily thoughts and worries; marriage rights, bankruptcy, shootings, etc., data mining this information and collecting related content. Using mapping tools to create geographic points for events, which were then turned into constellations. These constellations became the star field installation and the points for the dot to dots. Sound bites collected are mixed and layered displacing any linguistic understanding with a soundscape mimicking the microwave background residue, a trace of cosmic history. These different points of entry to the work cause a constant repositioning as the viewer navigates the work. An agitation that may lead to the rejection of the work or the elimination of one or more components enabling a moment of pause; these actions become symbolic of humanities search for a truth to our existence and the constant fading and restructuring of societal ideals within a system.
